Neither Rain, Nor Sleet, Nor Hail

Hello Grade 4 & 5,

We mailed our Great Canadian Mail Race letters today. They are heading out all over Canada, but first, they are travelling part of the route by dog sled.

What’s that? You heard right, by dog team. We are very fortunate that the principal from our school is a dog sledder and is participating in the mail run this weekend.  As an honorary letter carrier, he will be mailing your letters for us.
(Here are the 2 cover letters of explanation. One letter is about the Great Canadian Mail Race -Source: Mrs. Judy Burnham – and one is about the dog sled delivery.)

The letters are going out through the Annual Gold Rush Trail Dog Sled Mail Run. The trail starts north of Quesnel, runs through Wells, and on to a furious finish in Barkerville. Our letters will be put in the regular Canada Post in the historic Gold Rush Town of Barkerville.

As far as I know, these are the only letters in the Great Canadian Mail Race travelling by dog team. I wonder how many other ways our letters will travel before they reach their destinations? Today, I would like you to write a comment telling how you think your letter will travel.

I would also like to ask blog visitors to comment and tell us about unusual ways of delivering mail, either in Canada or around the world. How do you get your mail?
Go Dogs, GO!

  1. I’m mailing my letter to Richmond, BC. I think it will be travelling by mail truck. I think it will take 4 days to get there.

  2. My letter is going to Dawson Creek in British Columbia. I think it’s going to take about 2 weeks to get there. I think it will go through Prince George on Highway 97.

  3. My letter is going to Mangilaluk school in Tuktoyaktuk. I think it will take 1 week to get there. I also think it will travel by plane and truck.

  4. My letter is going Netsilik school, Taloyoak, Nunavut. I think it will take 1-2 months to get there and I think it will have 1 too many mail trucks, 1 boat, and 1 plane.

  5. My letter is going to Port Coquitlam. I think my letter is going to travel by truck. I think it will take 6 days to get to PoCo.

  6. This is probably one of the coolest letter traveling I’ve ever heard of! I’ve always wanted to dog sled. We have Epals in Surrey, England. My students email back and forth with 5th graders across the pond. Unfortunately, we only get snow once or twice a year, so dog sledding doesn’t happen here. Last year, though, we were out of school for a week due to snow/ice, and my dog pulled me up and down the driveway…does that count? :)

    • It absolutely counts. I love your spirit. I went cross country skiing with my friend and her son, and he let his dog pull him on his skis. Let’s just say that he was not only much braver, but much faster than me!Thanks for sharing.
